James Edison Smith, 72, of Letart, WV, passed away May 2, 2024, at his home following an extended illness.

He was born April 3, 1952, in Advent, WV, a son of the late Glenn Monroe Smith Sr. and Bessie Blanche (Blackshire) Smith. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Glenn M. Smith Jr., Donald, Wilbur, Walter and Frank Smith; sisters, Wanda Haines, Wilda Mae Parsons, Verlie Payne and Rosemary Brooks.

He was a United States Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and he was a Christian.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Betty Ann (Fisher) Smith; daughters, Amanda (Philip) Adkins of Ravenswood, Mary Smith of Hamlin, WV, Lorene Smith (Earl) McMahill of Letart and Bessie Smith of New Haven, WV; grandchildren Draven Sheamus Smith, Zion Maurice McMahill, and Phoenix Ash McMahill, all three of whom lived with him, Shawn Michael Nuzum and Sierra Dawn Nuzum; bonus grandchildren Chance Lee Adkins, Dylan Kelly Adkins, Cassie Ann Adkins, Sara Lynn Adkins,  Alexandra Rowan Adkins, Shawnee Marie Gilbert, and Chase Walker Gilbert; bonus great grandchild, Ivy Marie Scott, Caleb Walker Angel Gilbert, and multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren in Heaven.

Service will be 2 p.m. ~ Sunday, May 5, 2024 at Casto Funeral Home, Evans, WV, with Earl McMahill officiating. Burial will follow in Warner Cemetery, Leon, WV. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time Sunday at the funeral home.
