Philip Frederick
Southall
Aug 22, 1943 — Feb 14, 2022
Philip Frederick Southall, 78, of Ravenswood, WV, passed away February 14, 2022, in Jackson General Hospital, Ripley, WV, after a brief illness.
He was born in Silverton, WV, a son of the late Russell and Hazel (Thomas) Southall on August 22, 1943. He is the brother of Bill Southall (Janet) of Evans, WV, Doris (Ward) Findlay of Ohio, and Sam (Jane) Southall of Ravenswood, WV. He was preceded in death by his wife Donna Rose Southall, a sister Lois Ferrell and his brother Bob.
Phil attended Ravenswood High School and was honored to be on the state championship football team in 1957. After high school, Phil joined the United States Air Force and served in Germany. After returning home, Phil went to Florida to visit his dear friends Irene and Ruth Gould. They would introduce him to Donna and together they raised Penny, Tina and Donna Jean.
Phil was a truck driver and worked in the trucking industry all of his life. He is the former Vice President of Hartley Trucking. He later opened his own trucking company, PDQ Development, Ltd. He started a recycling center in Ravenswood called Carter Recycling and for many years with his grandsons, operated Carter Hay Company.
He was known as "the one-armed bandit" after surviving the second arm reattachment in the United States.
Phil loved working more than anyone out there and anyone who ever worked for or with him will tell you his work ethic was like no other. It was born into his soul, and he was well respected for that. Phil loved racing and was the former owner and operator of his own race team. He was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed attending races in Daytona and elsewhere.
He is survived by his daughters, Debra Rose Bonsavage of Sarasota, FL, Tina (Randy) Spears of Elizabeth, CO, and Donna (David) Cunningham of Liberty, WV. His whole world revolves around his grandsons, Ty (Summer) Carter and Ryan (Cheyenne) Carter, who worked side by side with their PaPa from the time they were old enough to reach the pedals of any piece of equipment. Other grandchildren include their sister, Brooke (Rydge) Cooper, and Jennifer and Dustin Spears, Michael Jon, Rachel and David Silverman; step-grandchildren, Kayla and Kara Cunningham; great-grandson, Wilder Levi Carter.
He leaves behind a sea of friends and former co-workers, many like family. Phil never had sons but, in his heart, he had Jr. Abels, Doug Moore, Bo Carter and Randy Walters. The family would like to thank the staff of Jackson General Hospital, Dr. John Snyder, and Patty Southall Rhodes (niece) for their care and compassion during this difficult time.
