Raymond "Sonny"
William Cossin
Apr 20, 1936 — Dec 14, 2025
Raymond William Cossin was born April 20, 1936, at home on Cow Run in Cottageville, WV, and he lived a wonderful, full life until his death on December 14, 2025. He was the oldest child and only son of Golden and Lida Cossin. Sonny, as he was known his whole life, leaves behind a legacy of hard work, love for his family, devotion to his wife, and an unshakable faith in God. He lived most of his life in Jackson and Mason Counties in WV, with a few short moves to Columbus, Ohio along the way. One of his favorite things as a child was listening to the Lone Ranger on the radio and wondering what Battle Creek, Michigan might look like. He graduated from Ravenswood High School in 1954, and served in the United States Army at Fort Gordon in Georgia. He remained in the Army National Guard where his unit was called to Fort Knox, KY during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was a long-time employee of Kaiser Aluminum, starting in 1956 and retiring in 1998. Sonny was a member of and attended church for many years at Evergreen Hills United Baptist Church and then later at Parchment Valley Baptist Church.
Sonny married Juanita Hudson on December 20, 1959, and the two were together for just shy of 66 years. When Juanita's roommate stood Sonny up, she stepped in, and they went for a drive in Sonny's yellow Oldsmobile convertible for their first date. Their 66 years together resulted in four children, eight grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and a lifetime of love and laughter.
Sonny loved the outdoors and was an avid gardener, burdening his children with mounds of corn to shuck and beans to string every summer. He also loved to fish and hunt and passed his love of all those things on to his children and grandchildren. Music was another passion, and Sonny loved to sing and play hymns on his Martin guitar. He tried his hand at the fiddle, and his family was very happy he gave that up and stuck with his guitar. He enjoyed singing in church choirs where his tenor voice rang out. If you knew Sonny, you know that you could most often hear him coming by his whistling before you could see him. His whistling lives in the memories of so many who experienced the joy of hearing him.
Hard work was at the core of Sonny's being. His first paying job at around age 10 was lighting the fire at Silver Valley School. He saved his money from that job and bought himself a bike, which his sisters were forbidden to touch. He was seldom idle, always working in the garden and around the house. He chopped wood, gardened, ran or walked a mile every day well into his eighties. His hard work was balanced by a wonderful sense of humor that brought laughter and smiles to all who knew him.
Sonny is survived by and will be missed dearly by his wife Juanita Hudson Cossin, his children Jeff Cossin, Tammy James (Terry), Scott Cossin (Lynn Merical), and Trina Cossin, his sisters Evelyn Bialobrzeski, Barb Anderson, Yvette Rogers, and Annette Geiger, his aunts Carol Sayre and Betty Henry, his grandchildren Joe and Andy Cossin, Josh James and Alyssa Edsall, Doug and Ray Cossin, and Anna and Adam Koscielicki, 11 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Graveside Service will be at 11 am Sat. Dec. 20, 2025 in Jackson County Memory Gardens, Cottageville, WV, with Rev. Herman Robinson, officiant.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to the Jackson County Snack Pack.
