Richard Sampson Matheny, 61, of Ravenswood, WV, passed away June 14, 2026 at his home following an extended illness.

He was born September 2, 1964, in Point Pleasant, WV, a son of the late Dencil William and Odith Mae (King) Matheny. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Dencil L. Matheny.

He was a graduate of Point Pleasant High School. He was a United States Navy veteran and a member of the West Virginia National Guard. He was a retired cook for Appalachian Electric Power River Operations with 23 years of service. He enjoyed music and playing the piano.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, La Jena Michelle (Craig) Matheny; sons, Jourdan N. Matheny, Isaiah D. Matheny and Nehemiah D. Matheny all of Ravenswood, WV; daughters, Brittane N. Williamson and her husband Chase of New Haven, WV and Yolanda R. Matheny of Ravenswood; brothers, Robert Matheny of Point Pleasant, WV and James Matheny of Leon, WV; sisters, Deloris (Clotis) Hart of Leon, WV, Barbara (Mike) Hall of Leon, WV and Iva Molze of Evans, WV; three grandchildren.

Private graveside service will be  Friday, June 19, 2026 in Pine Grove Cemetery, Leon, WV, with Doug Garten officiating.
